Ondo-Taiko Japanese Dance Ondo dancing is a traditional Japanese dance done during Japanese festivals (matsuri). Ondo is performed to Japanese folk songs along with the sounds of taiko drums. Dancers form a large circle, sometimes many circles, around a podium called a Yagura. The Yagura is like a music stage. The Ondo dance is a rhythmic dance done in unison. Dancers wear brightly colored kimonos or happi coats. Although there are formal Ondo dancers, Nisei Week encourages beginners to participate and have FUN! |
